High End vs Drugstore Makeup – Which ones should you dupe, and which ones should you splurge?

I got to admit that I enjoy splurging on high end makeup brands. It is pretty damaging to my wallet, I know. Can’t help it but I do not spend all my hard-earned money on expensive products that are not worth it. I do buy cheaper products from the chemists. Want to know what products you can dupe to save your cash to shop on pretty dresses? Read on.

Foundation – Splurge

The Base… I personally think it is the most important step in applying makeup. It does not matter if you have awesome cat eye and the most kissable lips, the overall aesthetics will be a bit off if your skin does not present itself to be almost flawless.

Thus, I recommend splurging on a good foundation that suits your skin. It is one of the first layers to sit on your skin for hours so I’d say it’s best to choose one that will not harm your delicate skin. Do you remember in my previous post, I mentioned that sunscreen is essential to add on to your daily routine? Well, if you are tad bit lazy like I am, there are many good foundations out there that incorporate broad spectrum to protect the skin from harmful UV rays too. So, you can kill two bird with one stone by just applying the foundation. How great is that?

A good foundation may set you back with a high price, but quality prevails. These luxury brands spent lots of money on producing quality ingredient that makes them last longer and not to mention, beautiful packaging too. I am a fan of Dior’s foundations and these two are my favourites. I have a combination skin so make sure you get your shade and type of skin checked before spending loads on the pricey foundation.

  1. Dior Diorskin Forever Foundation

It feels like second skin after application and finishes off matte. It also does not crease, and you do not need to apply a lot of product. A little goes a long way. It is not a high coverage foundation, but it does what it is advertised for. You can reapply for more coverage. This foundation comes with SPF20.

  1. Dior Prestige Le Cushion Teint de Rose

I must say this smell amazing. Once you lift the inner flap, you get a whiff of the beautiful scent of rose but not overpowering. This works like liquid foundation, except it is smaller and can easily fit into your makeup bag. It comes with SPF 40 so this is great for the Australian sun. This also works quite similarly to the Diorskin Forever Foundation but it has a more natural finish. This however, much pricier.

Eyeliner – Dupe

A lot of affordable eyeliners are great at what they are manufactured to do. Usually you just need to tick a few points before deciding whether to get that eyeliner or not. Even the most luxurious brand of eyeliners does the same things and deliver very similar quality with those from drugstore. Eyeliners should glide on smoothly and evenly, be waterproof, and with reasonably high pigmentation without bleeding.

Maybelline produces a wide range of amazing eyeliners that tick all the boxes. They are all very affordable too. Here are some of my favourites.

  1. Maybelline Master Liner Cream Pencil

  1. Maybelline Master Precise Liquid Liner

Eyeshadow – Dupe/Splurge

I rate eyeshadow as either dupe or splurge because it really depends on what results you are after. From my experience, most cheaper eyeshadows either had lots of fallouts or does not last very long on my lids. However, I do enjoy the trendy colours drugstore brands bring out every season. It is a great way to experiment with the fabulous colours and textures without breaking the bank.

For the higher end ones, the eyeshadows are more pigmented and last longer so it kind of balances out in terms of whether it is worth it to spend on eyeshadow because you do not need to apply lots to create the perfect look you want.

Below are two products that I enjoy from either price range.

  1. Revlon Colorstay Looks Book Eye Shadow Palette – Enigma

The colours are beautiful and versatile whether for everyday wear or to glam up for a night out with the girls. This palette is small enough to fit into the makeup bag. Price is affordable.

  1. Dior 5 Couleurs Wild Earth

It does not have as many colours as the Revlon’s but the palette does come with beautiful earthy colours that are easy to play around. They also glide on smoothly as they are creamy in texture. The colours are highly pigmented and comfortable to wear all day. This comes with a hefty price tag, but I’d say it is worth it to splurge if you have extra money.

Lipstick – Splurge

If you have healthy lips and do not crack or flare up with allergy when you use drugstore lipsticks, go ahead and dupe them. It just does not work out for me as my lips would crack badly every time no matter how much Paw Paw or lip balm I applied. This is one of the reasons why I splurge on lip products. I also find the higher end ones are less drying and longer lasting with more colours to choose from.

My top favourite lip product of all is this one.

  1. Chanel Le Rouge Duo Ultra Tenue

This is the most long-lasting lipstick I’ve ever worn, hands down. The colour stays after I ate oily fried chicken. How cool is that? Never have to reapply after eating. It also comes with a gloss in case your lips feel dry, but I almost never had to reapply the gloss. My current favourite shade is 40 – light rose.

Ultimately the choice is yours whether to splurge or to dupe makeup products. The point of this post is to send the message that while some makeup products are worth it to spend lots of money for its quality, there are also many affordable products out there that create similar results.  You just need to make the wise choice on how you spend your money.
